Asbestos has historically been used in various applications for its durability and fire resistance. It can be found in a large number of building materials used both indoors and outdoors, including; carpets, glues, insulation, tiles, ventilation tubes and wall panelling. As part of a regular maintenance schedule the water used in cooling towers should be tested for the presence of Legionella. Legionella pneumophila is the cause of Legionnaires’ disease, which is a serious and potentially fatal respiratory illness that results in severe pneumonia. The bacteria can also cause a milder illness called Pontiac fever, resulting in flu-like symptoms that typically resolve within a few days without treatment.
